modular helmet help

Postby rcpriest on Thu Sep 13, 2007 8:02 am

Ok i am on the hunt.

I'm in a non helmet law state and not much on wearing helmets. But getting older and wise. Its time to start wearing gear.

So here is what i am looking for. Modular with the dual shield both clear and the slide down tinted one.

Like the Vox modular you can find on ebay. But the reviews i read on amazon about the Vox makes it sound cheep. And i can not find any home page for them, or any info if the shields can be changed out.

If the dual shield is not out there on other brands. What is a good single Modular. Good ventilation, and easy to change shields.

Thanks

I have a Zamp FL-20. It is a modular with dual shields. It's on the inexpensive side. I paid $130 shipped for the multicolor one. A solid one can be had for $120 but saty away from the white unless you want to be a Stormtrooper

The good: Its a modular, flip up inside tinted shield that can be operated with left hand, snap on end of strap to secure extra dangling strap, outside shield has nice strong detents and can be replaced w/o tools. Pretty comfy, removable-washable-replaceable liner and cheek pads.

The bad: the chinbar is pretty thick (require tilting of the head farther downward to read gauges than any other helmet I've ever had), ventilation is weak (I've never had a helmet with really good ventilation), the release for the chinbar is on the inside lower edge of the chinbar so Jay Leno could never where this helmet w/o constantly releasing the chinbar.

Overall I'd say it's pretty good for the money. I love the modular 2 shield idea so my next will have to be the same but I will make sure I have the funds to get the best one out there.

If going modular, IMHO there's only one option... Nolan. Not crazy expensive, but super nice. That being said, I'd never buy a modular... Not as much protection and much heavier...

The weight is a big jump for the modulars. And they don't have quite the ventilation as a normal full face. And not many have a blue base or a ton of blue in the design :(

This has me thinking http://tinyurl.com/35pvux That would look ok with the blue and black gear i am getting now.

But still looking around for better

If you're looking at standard full face helmets, check out the Scorpion EXO-700. I've got one and love it. Not very expensive, either.

Those are good quality lids... they just don't fit me right... I have an HJC AC-12...

Like both the scorpion and the HJC.

The Zox i linked the shields are hard to find for replacements. so that one is out of the question for sure.

Will go to the dealer next week and check out what they have and see what fits me well.

I have a Buell helmet. It can be seen on the Buell UK website in the Apparel Catalog. It's a modular and I like it but then again It's the only helmet I've ever had so I have nothing to compare it to. I wear glasses so the modular feature really comes in handy (I can put it on w/o taking my glasses off.) The shield comes off pretty easy but I've never seen any replacements. Maybe you can find out who makes it and go from there if you don't want a Buell helmet. You mentioned black & blue gear, the new all black helmet on the Buell website looks pretty good but seems like it would be hot.

The new Scorpion EXO 1000 has a dual sunshield screen type thing. Not modular though. I would definitely stray from there personally.

Exo-900 is out now. Scorpions modular AND can remove the front completely for an open face helmet. All the extras that the 1000 has: Flip down sunscreen, pump up cheeks. I've ordered one, just waiting for it to come in.

I used to have an AGV modular that I loved, wore it out though.
